What is dog bad breath & what are the symptoms?

In a few words? Dog bad breath, or halitosis, is that awful smell that emanates from your dog’s mouth as he happily sits in front of you like a good boy and pants with contentment. It’s the breath that knocks you over and makes you think about how dogs like to lick their butts every time you smell their breath.

And while the smell is enough to stop us in our tracks sometimes, there’s more damage that can come to your dog’s mouth if your dog isn’t able to process and digest food well. In addition to dog bad breath, you may see dirtier teeth, softer gums and ‘hairy’ looking tongues accompany the smell.

The symptoms of dog bad breath include:

  • Bad odor from dog’s mouth
  • Scaly teeth
  • Thick-coated tongue
  • Ill gums

Causes of dog bad breath

Your dog may eat something nasty or have poor dental hygiene and that can cause bad breath. But poor dog gut health can also cause dog halitosis.

Dogs swallow a lot of saliva and that saliva contains bacteria. When that bacteria travels from the mouth to the gut, some of the ‘bad’ mouth bacteria decides to take up residence in your dog’s gut. That causes an imbalance that could lead to halitosis.

There’s a strong connection between your dog’s gut microbiome and oral microbiome. An overgrowth of bad bacteria in their small intestine can produce smelly gas. Pathogens that create foul gas can grow in your dog if they suffer from malabsorption or maldigestion. That gas is absorbed into their bloodstream and when your dog eventually exhales that gas? You smell it in their breath.

Indigestion, acid reflux, slow digestion or bowel obstruction could cause bad breath too. Basically, bad smells that are associated with poor digestion exit your dog’s body in two ways: his mouth and his rear. If the bad smells don’t go in the right direction in his intestinal tract, you’ll know with your dog’s halitosis.

Warning: If your dog has bad breath

If your dog has bad breath, you don’t want to let it go. You want to make sure your dog’s food is full of nutrition, and that he’s able to digest everything properly and he’s absorbing all the nutrients you’re feeding him. You’ll also want to make sure that your dog’s dental hygiene is a priority, as there is risk of disease of the gum and teeth if not. Dog bad breath can mean something bigger than just a poor lunch choice is going on.

More information about dog bad breath

Good dog gut health is pivotal to overall health in your dog. If your dog’s gut is healthy, odds are their breath won’t make you want to turn tail and run. Dogs who have balanced guts also are less at risk for diseases or illnesses that may cause later problems.

Fiber may help with dog bad breath

Fiber is helpful in battling dog bad breath because it aids your dog’s digestive system and keeps everything moving properly through the system. When your dog has the right fiber intake, their balanced microbiomes are capable of preventing any of the swallowed bacteria they got in saliva from taking their gut over. Not only does the right combination of insoluble and soluble fiber help prevent diarrhea, constipation and slow digestion, but it also keeps your dog’s gut ready to fight any offensive bacteria that could contribute to their dog halitosis.

Prebiotics and probiotics may help with stinky dog breath

Prebiotics and probiotics are key supplements to helping your dog’s gut health be at its best. Prebiotics and Probiotics balance out your dog’s digestive tract bacteria and microbiome and this helps keep odor at bay. The prebiotic in Bernie’s is Inulin, which acts as a fertilizer to feed the good bacteria in your dog’s lower digestive tract. When the good bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract gets the right nutrition, they thrive and keep your dog’s gut healthy and balanced.

Probiotics are the good bacteria in your dog’s gut. Adding that good bacteria through supplementation helps achieve good dog gut health by pushing bad (stinky) bacteria out. When the good bacteria get the proper nutrition, they thrive. When they thrive, the gut becomes more balanced and functions properly. Probiotics are the good bacteria in the gut. When we add good bacteria with Bernie’s, we help achieve good dog gut health with thriving, healthy bacteria that pushes bad bacteria out.

Enzymes may help with dog halitosis

Enzymes in Bernie’s Perfect Poop will help your dog’s digestive tract break food down better. Your dog’s digestive system is detailed and involves several organs. The healthier that system, the better your dog’s digestion will be. This means less halitosis for him (and you).
